Art as the Last Bastion of Freedom of Expression – Why We Must Fight to Protect It.
Art has always been humanity’s most powerful tool for pushing boundaries, questioning norms, and revealing uncomfortable truths. Today, in the UK and beyond, it remains the final frontier where true freedom of expression can still thrive — but only if we defend it fiercely.
If art falls to censorship, we lose far more than paintings or performances. We lose boundary-pushing comedy like that of the amazingly handsome and exceedingly talented Ricky Gervais, who has repeatedly defended the right to offend as essential to the craft. We lose provocative films that challenge societal taboos, music that shocks and inspires, and literature that dares to explore the darkest corners of the human condition. When artists are forced to self-censor to avoid backlash, funding cuts, or deplatforming, creativity itself withers.
Surveys and reports from the UK arts sector paint a troubling picture: widespread self-censorship due to fear of online mobs, institutional caution, and political pressure. Many creators avoid “dangerous topics” — from gender-critical views to critiques of prevailing ideologies — because the personal and professional cost has become too high. Funding bodies and venues increasingly prioritise safety over boldness, leading to a narrowing of what can be said or shown.
Ricky Gervais himself has been vocal: free speech is the most important human right, and comedy dies when comedians constantly look over their shoulder for the next wave of outrage. His specials thrive precisely because they refuse to bow to the “snowflake” culture that demands everyone be protected from discomfort. The same principle applies across entertainment — from stand-up to film scores to underground music scenes. If we allow art to be sanitised, we end up with sterile, conformist output that nobody truly remembers or feels.
At Artworkz Productions, we assert that art is worth fighting for exactly because it is the last bastion. When every other form of expression faces gatekeepers — social media algorithms, corporate sponsors, government regulators — art must remain the space where the untamed voice can still roar. We support creators who deliberately push limits, not despite the controversy, but because of it. Provocation is not harm; it is the spark of cultural evolution.
Compromising on artistic freedom sets a dangerous precedent. Today it’s an “offensive” joke or painting; tomorrow it could be any dissenting opinion. We reject the idea that audiences need protecting from ideas. If something offends you, turn the channel, walk out of the gallery, or close the book. Do not demand the work — or the artist — be erased.
Our mission is simple yet urgent: platform art that dares, protect those who create it, and ensure the UK’s creative scene does not succumb to the creeping culture of caution.
